Intelligence Management

A client from the consumer goods sector required assistance developing a complex investigation in Eastern Europe. WRI carried out open and closed source research, analysed material obtained during raids, processed intelligence via IPO, Europol and Interpol and using established contacts facilitated meetings with relevant EU Law Enforcement and Customs officers leading to successful raids at manufacturing and wholesale / retail locations.

Investigations

As a result of internet monitoring WRI identified a group of Limited companies operating together to manufacture, advertise, distribute and transport a variety of product infringing the clients registered trademarks. Following an extensive investigation during which we identified criminal assets and manufacturing premises, we supported enforcement officers on a series of raids (commercial and residential) leading to the recovery of thousands of counterfeit items and the seizure of manufacturing equipment and monetary assets.

Training

In support of a South West based Trading Standards authority WRI developed and delivered a bespoke intelligence management training programme to all staff (from senior managers to admin staff) enabling them to understand and implement the Intelligence Operating Model and engage other enforcement and regulatory agencies as equals. The training led to greater engagement by all staff in the intelligence process supporting the authorities intelligence led policy.

Brand protection/due diligence

A client from the clothing sector had marketed an innovative product and was subsequently targeted by infringers who flooded the retail market with counterfeit versions of the item. WRI reviewed the clients IP portfolio and identified weaknesses in its trademark protection i.e. infringers were taking advantage by attempting to register identical marks. Our actions led to the rejection of those applications, the recovery of 3000 counterfeit items, prosecution of the infringers and the subsequent registration of substantive trademarks for the client.

Consultancy

WRI were engaged to support the National Trading Standards Board in managing a national project to assess the threat to the UK from Fulfilment Houses used by organised criminal groups to facilitate the importation and distribution of unsafe and counterfeit products. Providing project management, strategic and tactical direction our MD facilitated multi-agency meetings and intelligence gathering protocols and supported operational activity leading to the seizure of infringing goods and delivery of best practice principles.
